Intolerant homo?
Last night after studying, I went back to the law school in order to drop off some books. There were two fabulous young women, we'll call them Jane Doe and Jane Roe for the purposes of this post, sitting at a table having a conversation so I joined them for awhile.
One of the things that came up in this conversation was related second-hand to me, but I found it mildly troubling. And although this story is seriously hearsay - I'm certain that the fact pattern is generally replicated in our society.
Basically, a friend of Jane Doe's is a homo and while hanging out with him in the great city of Philadelphia, Jane Doe pointed out a strikingly attractive black man who was a bouncer at a late-night coffee shop, in I'm assuming Center City, and said something to the effect of "Isn't he delicious..." To which the friend (homo) said "Silly Jane Doe, I don't date black men."
Right, so - what the fuck. I mean, to use Jane Roe's phraseology, I'm an equal opportunity dater, I understand that a lot of people in this world are not - BUT I expect more out of members of the gay community.
Hello, we're a minority - a minority of people which is discriminated against all the time, a minority which certain political parties (I'll give you a clue, it's the party that is pure evil) actively attempt to legislate against. I would think that being a member of a minority, in such a position, would force one to acknowledge and discard any intolerances they might have based on silly classifications. I mean it's just skin color - it's not like he's republican - that I would be able to understand (haha).
I understand that people have certain traits that they are attracted to - some people like blonds, others like brown eyes....whatever, I just think that a blanket prohibition on dating black men is absurd - for anyone, let alone by a member of an oppressed minority.
Though, you know gay people, it may not be about race at all, it could be that he's afraid that his new boyfriends skin color might not match his new Ferragamo shoes....
