Gay Cinema

Why are gay-themed films so bad? (Documentaries excepted)

Last night, when I returned home a little before 2:00 - I decided that I wouldn't take the rational route and go to bed (read: pass out), but would instead watch a movie freshly delivered via NetFlix (Thanks NetFlix).

So, I watched this movie, which, don't get me wrong, dealt with some important issues and contained some touching scenes, but my god - objectively speaking the acting was atrocious, the storyline was cluttered and there were way too many useless characters.

I say 'objectively speaking' because my first inclination was to say that the acting was 'good, for a gay film' which sadly is the standard that I apply. There are definitely reduced standards within this genre.

I just don't understand why these films can't be more finely crafted - there are a lot of gay people, they have a lot of money to spend on this shit, these films get watched (even though they aren't that great) - ostensibly the whole operation makes money. If the problem is hiring better talent and better directing - I can't imagine that a demographic underserved by major motion pictures wouldn't gladly pay a bit more for a quality film.

Though until then, I'll have to suffer though with my double-standard of expectations.
