I [heart] International Law

IL is a great class, it's a fucking shame that the U.S. doesn't afford it more respect, but such is life.

Anyway - one of our assignments was to read about the Helms-Burton Act. The act basically gave a domestic cause of action to any American party against a foreign party that had purchased property from Cuba, that had previously been expropriated by Cuba over 40 years ago in the Cuban revolution. The details aren't that important for this post, but the international response was crazy against this Act.

But Canada's response was by far the best - legislation was introduced in Parliament - such that a cause of action would accrue against Americans that had 'trafficked' in property expropriated from the British after the American Revolution. It didn't pass, but it certainly was one hell of a protest to the U.S. position - and quite funny.
