God I love Pittsburgh....

Pittsburgh rocks. Today we elected 7 judges to the common pleas court, a sheriff and a mayor - and they're all democrats!

Go Blue Team!

yeah, but allegheny county also firmly voted not to retain justices nigro and newman, buying into a completely specious smear campaign blaming them for something they have absolutely nothing to do with: the legislative pay raise.

justice newman managed to secure retention statewide, barely. justice nigro wasn't so fortunate, and is out of a job -- a job he has done passingly well, and with unfailing integrity, for many years.

a good man lost his job for no good reason. this marks the first time a supreme court justice has not been retained in 200 years. and over what -- a pay raise that the Court hasn't even touched.

not to mention that if frugality had anything to do with it, the voters would have considered the cost of appointing a new justice who will have to set up a new office somewhere, hire new staff, etc. there are significant transition costs.

anyway, my point is merely that you shouldn't break your arm patting allegheny county on the back for voting democrat as it usually does. on retention, allegheny county voted as shamefully as the rest of the state, or moreso. it's like they tried to sue hospital a for unaffiliated hospital b's misconduct because, you know, they're both hospitals and stuff. and it's like the jury -- pennsylvania voters -- returned a plaintiff's verdict.

I concur that the retention elections were ridiculously implicated in the legislative pay raise fiasco, though I’m not going to let that rain on my electoral parade. I mean sure there are implications to the retention election outcome, but hey – the past 5 elections have been an absolute disappointment (for me) – so when the Dems get more than 60% of the vote – I’m happy.

And yes, Allegheny County didn’t do anything out of character or unexpected yesterday (voting Dem) – but it’s still nice to tack one up for the Blue Team. So I’ll continue to smile, at least for the rest of the day (and in my mind I’ll be counting down the days until the Commonwealth can vote Rick Santorum out of a job).

Let's not forget, either, that Mr. Sheriff DeFazio is currently the subject of a federal investigation.

voters can do some dumb things. It's just fortunate that they do something smart by accident every once in a while.
